The world is changing rapidly in a chaotic era as the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis continues.

In addition, modern society is facing challenges related to food resources due to rapid global climate change, while humanity is being threatened by various new diseases and aging populations. The interest in aging and a life of well-being will lead to the development of the bio industry. Furthermore, the importance of breakthroughs in biotechnology is increasing day by day from the socio-economic perspective. R&D investment in bio industry-related fields has been continuously expanding in the Korean society, with a lot of investment made to strengthen the competitiveness of biomedical technology and facilitate its entry into the global market in the future by setting the bio and health fields as the new growth engines.

Considering the size and R&D capabilities of domestic bio companies, along with domestic and international environmental changes and demands of the times, the role of universities in developing core new technologies through basic research in the bio field and cultivating high-quality talents with a global outlook is very important; thus, continuous investment and development are required.

Through the fourth phase of this project, our Yonsei Education & Research Center for Biosystems will continue to support initiatives to foster excellent researchers, improve research activities, and build infrastructure, while benefiting from the outstanding accomplishments and systems achieved through the last three phases of the project and successfully responding to changes in the new era. Specifically, we intend to complete the BIO-HISTORY 4.0 vision through business over the next seven years, which will contribute to solving industrial and social problems through the Humanics Convergence Talent Training System required by the Fourth Industrial Revolution era, and realize technology-based industrialization. The Division of Life Sciences & Biotechnology at Yonsei University, a global research center capable of sustainable growth through the establishment of an open circular structure of technology-based industrialization, is aiming to present a model of a research group that will ultimately contribute to the country and society.
